Deferring a grad offer

Hi,

I did an IBD internship this summer in Healthcare and received a grad offer.

However, I'm planning on doing a MSc in Economics next year, due to personal interest, and I pretty much have my mind set on doing an MSc.

I've been told that if I want to defer, I'd have to do another internship next summer. But ideally I'd like to try another division at another bank (say Sales for example).

How do I get around having to do another summer internship in the same division at the same bank? What excuse could I use?

Thanks!

Congrats on your offer.

I'm not sure what you're getting at though. You want to defer your offer, but would like to explore a different division. You seem to also want to try working at a different bank.

If so, why defer your offer at all? I understand that you'd minimise your risk by doing so (i.e. you'd have an offer in the bag as a reserve) but it doesn't sound like an offer you particularly want. As a result, it might be better for you to not accept the offer (unless they can a) give you a division you like and b) you want to work at that bank) and then apply to a different bank for the internship you want.

Have the bank actually guaranteed you an internship next year in the same division? If not, just intern wherever you want. Otherwise, I am confident the bank would be understanding if you said you'd like to try out a different division first before securing a full-time graduate offer - it's not that unusual. If you don't ask, you won't get.
