Most of us disapprove of wily work machinations, but experts say ignoring power structures will hold you back
I think this is a great way to put it. And a good perspective thats quite insightful so thought to share; I can personally think of a number of a situations where it was important that I stood out for my self at work and not "yield back". It not always worked out the way I hoped it would.. but to be fair everyone serves their own interest and not everyone will play fairly, which will affect you unless you are going to protect your interests.
